What documentation do I need for SSDI?

When you can no longer work due a health issue, you may apply for Social Security Disability in Kansas City. SSDI can provide you with income when you cannot work, but it requires meeting very strict guidelines and requirements. To make sure the application process goes smoothly, you should take time to double check that you have provided all the required documentation.

The Social Security Administration says that including the required documentation can make the application process for SSDI move along quicker. It also can reduce the chances of a denial simply due to application issues and not on your actual merit to receive the benefits.

You want to provide plenty of proof that shows you qualify for SSDI. This includes information to prove you are who you say you are and that you are a U.S. citizen who is able to receive the benefits. Make sure to include your birth certificate and other proof of citizenship. You also want to include military records if you have them.

You also need to show your income by including your tax returns or W-2s. You may also want to include your banking information. This can help speed up the deposit of benefits once the SSA approves your application.

Finally, you need proof of your disability. Include medical documentations. If you receive workers' compensation due to the same issue for which you are applying for SSDI, then include your award letter.

Do note that some documents you give to the SSA must be the originals. The SSA does not accept copies for some types of documents, such as your birth certificate. This information is for educational use only. It is not legal advice.
